2 Workshops by Earth Trust Nilgiris on Organic Farming and Organic Herbs

A). Organic Farming Training For Kota Tribe Women’s Group

In the last three months Earth Trust Provided Primary Health Care Training in Kollimalai village in the Nilgiris.
In continuation of the above programme the trainees were given a one-day training on Organic & Biodynamic Farming and on setting up of a herbal & Kitchen garden.

The training imparted technology on organic farming using low external inputs, local natural resources and principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture.


Sessions:

  • Video show on  Slow poisoning of the planet
  • Overview of Earth Trust Activities
  • Introduction of Organic & Biodynamic Farming
  • Improvement of soil fertility measures through biodynamic compost, vermi compost, Amruth soil, green manure, mulching, mixed crop etc.
  • Setting up an organic kitchen garden
  • Identification & uses of medicinal herbs
  • Input preparation

  • Panchagavya Preparation & Usage
  • Jeevamritham Preparation  & Usage



B)  Training Programme On Value Added Products From Organic Herbs & Vegetables

Sessions:

  • Introduction to Earth Trust
  • Importance of herbal plants
  • Briefing on value addition through organic herbs & vegetables


Practical Session:
Adathoda cough syrup preparation
Ingredients:

Local Name                    Quantity        Botanical name
Adathoda fresh leaves     700 gms        Adathoda vasica
Sugar                                      1 kg            -
Agraharam                         10 gms        Spylanthus calva
Alpinia Powder                   10 gms        Alpinia calcarata
Clove                                  10 no.s        Eugenia caryophyllata
Cardamom                            4 gms        Elettaria cardamom
Ghee (Clarified Butter)        50 gms           -


Preparation:  

  • Collect the leaves, wash well and let it dry or wipe dry with clean cloth
  • Chop leaves into fine pieces
  • Stir-fry leaves with clarified butter for a few minutes till all the moisture is gone
  • Add two litres of water
  • Boil until it reduces to one litre
  • Add powdered alpinia, clove and cardamom
  • Remove from fire
  • Stir well and strain the liquid to get a smooth juice
  • Return the juice to the fire, add the sugar and stir well
  • When it reaches a honey-like consistency it is ready. Cool and store in bottle/s


Usage:  Cold and cough, Bronchitis, Asthmatic problems
Dosage: 15ml syrup with 15 ml of water after meals 3times daily
