The sustained efforts of the Earth Trust over the last 15 years in the Nilgiris District of Southern India to heal the soil that has been subjected to mindless application of toxic chemicals is beginning to fructify as there are signs of encouragement from all quarters including the Government agencies. A two-day Organic seminar was organized by the Horticulture Department to educate the farmers on the natural and organic methods of farming.
Degradation of the soil quality (Soil pH in Nilgiris has come down to 3.0-4.5 because of over usage of chemicals), environmental impacts due to chemical farming and its effect on the health of the consumer were highlighted by various speakers during the seminar. These were exactly the issues that ET has been emphasizing over its fight against chemical-based farming.
The crux of the meeting cannot be over emphasized than this, when the local representative of a political organization stated that the seminar was one of the events that he loved to attend rather than the political functions and he is looking forward to cultivate organically in his own field and further because he himself is a farmer.
The Earth Trust was invited to set up a stall during the seminar to display its array of products, which received accolades from the attendees.
Meanwhile, in the ET farms, training to the ET staff and farmers on quick-composting was conducted by Shivansh Composting, New Delhi. The merits of Shivansh composting process are; final compost rich in microorganisms that mediate nutrient transfer to the plants, compost that helps retain moisture in the soil, weed seeds are destroyed (when weeds present in the farm is used as green material) during the composting process because of the thermophilic conditions, a boon to organic farming. Compost training was conducted in the ET resource farm in Holabettu and in one of the ET farmer’s field in Gudalur.
The Earth Trust would like to convey its whole-hearted gratitude to all its supporters.
