Dear Friends,
We have amazing updates to share with you. In March, we organized a special side event for the UN Water Conference entitled "Addressing Global Water Challenges for Sustainable Development through Climate Action and Nuclear Disarmament in the Pacific." Speakers included: the Ambassador of Kiribati; the Ambassador of the Marshall Islands; Benetick, MEI's Executive Director and RTT Adviser; Alei, our New York Youth Outreach Coordinator, and many more. They focused on the twin existential threats of climate change and nuclear weapons in the Pacific and youth engagement. Benetick focused on the situation in the Marshall Islands. We are grateful to NAPF, MEI, Peace Boat US, Blue Planet Alliance, Sustainable Ocean Alliance, and the Mission of Kiribati for supporting this event.
In an effort to raise awareness about the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons amongst university students, we convened a special seminar on nuclear abolition through the TPNW at Columbia University. Experts from Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Malaysia, the ICRC, and Mexico briefed the students. Additionally, Bonnie, the Director of the Armed Conflict and Civilian Protection at Harvard Law School, and Seth, the United Nations Liaison of ICAN, spoke as well. Furthermore, Dr. Hughes, the President of NAPF, shared her thoughts about the TPNW as well.
The speakers focused on the upcoming Second Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW, and work on advancing the humanitarian provisions of the TPNW, including victim assistance, environmental remediation, international assistance, and cooperation. In addition, they touched upon efforts to universalize the treaty and how young people can support the TPNW. Also, Dr. Hughes discussed the role of the Scientific Advisory Group. We would like to thank NAPF, Columbia's European Society, SDG Student Hub, and CIRCA for supporting this event.
Following these two seminars, MEI and RTT brought a group of young people, including youth from the Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, French Polynesia, and Fiji to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In Hiroshima, they participated in the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapon's G7 Youth Summit and met with the Governor of Hiroshima. In Nagasaki, they convened a series of workshops and met with the Governor of Nagasaki. We will provide more updates about our trip in the next update.
We would like to thank everyone for supporting us.
Sincerely,
Christian
