Our partnership with Cents for Seeds

Cents for Seeds
Wondering what our partnership with Cents for Seeds is all about? Here's a powerful description.

Cents for Seeds began in 2010 with a simple yet powerful goal: to equip women in northern Uganda with the tools to break the cycle of poverty.

What started as a small initiative in Barr Village has now grown to over 30,000 women participating across multiple parishes. Each woman receives a 30kg loan of seeds (such as soya beans or sesame), a handheld gardening tool, access to educational workshops, and Village Savings and Loan groups. After harvest, she returns the original loan, allowing another woman to begin her own journey toward self-sufficiency.

Thanks to our incredible donors, just $30 funds the initial seed loan and supports our team of agronomists, who provide ongoing training and monitor progress.

Through drought, floods, and even locust plagues, Cents for Seeds participants have persevered. Data from our 2024 Social Impact Report shows that women in the program feel 15% more hope for the future and experience 11% more self-love and confidence than those not yet in the program.

But the challenges continue. Climate change remains the biggest threat to food security in Uganda. That’s why we’re deepening our focus on building climate resilience through initiatives like irrigation, rainwater harvesting, agroforestry, and exploring alternative seed types—ensuring that women can continue to thrive, no matter the conditions.

As we look ahead, our goal is to refine Cents for Seeds into a five-year pathway to self-sufficiency, allowing us to expand the program to reach even more communities.

A hand-up, not a handout. A harvest that feeds not just families, but futures.
