Access to Technology and Education in Mexico

Thanks to the support we have received on GlobalGiving´s platform our project Access to Technology and Education in Mexico has more and more users. In this project report we would like to introduce you to Victor Manuel Rosado, a dedicated and enthusiastic 63 year old RIA user who convinced his grandchild Victor Alejandro Arvisu to enroll and learn computing at the RIA.

In June this year, Victor Rosado went to the RIA (Learning and Innovation Network) Center located in Huixquilucan a municipality in the State of Mexico, and decided to enroll in Acércate a Open Office, a course intended for people that want to get closer to write texts, make presentations and know who to use a spreadsheet.

Let´s read what this proud grandfather has to say about his experience

“When I go to other organizations I feel they don´t respect me, at a certain moment I started to feel old and I am not old. The RIA is a nonprofit project created with the aim of helping. I brought my grandchild so that he can have a structured knowledge about the computer. I encourage him by reminding him that when I´m stuck I want him to help me out, that makes him more interested. Last but not least, being up to date is part of life; people start to get old when they are out of touch with new technology

Queremos agradecerles el apoyo dado a nuestros proyecto Access to Tecnology and Education in Mexico. Queremos presentarles a Victor Manuel Rosado un orgulloso abuelo de 63 años que va junto con su nieto al centro RIA (Red de Innovación y Aprendizaje) ubicado en el municipio de Huixquilucan, en el Estado de México.

Desde junio de este año Victor se inscribió a nuestro curso Acércate a Open Office y dos meses más tarde convenció a su nieto Victor Alejandro Arvisu, de 11 años, para que se inscribiera también en el curso Descubre la compu.

• A day with a Grandfather and his grandchild learning computing

We want to thank everyone who has supported our projects on GlobalGiving, especially regarding Access to Technology and Education in Mexico. In this project report we would like to introduce you to Iris López Martínez, an 11 year old blind girl who is taking English classes in one of our RIA (Learning and Innovation Network) Centers [www.ria.org.mx].

Iris is in 5^th grade and goes to a public elementary school in a little town called Santiaguito Coaxuxtenco. She decided she wanted to learn to speak English after participating in a singing contest thanks to a sponsorship from the Foundation where she is learning Braille. All of the other participants were English speakers and she was frustrated that she couldn´t communicate with them.

Her parents enrolled her in English classes at the RIA in the nearby town of Tenango del Valle in June. She is well integrated into the group of seven children in her class; she is a fast learner and works at the same pace, or sometimes even faster than her classmates.

With the funds raised through the GlobalGiving platform, we have been able to purchase a Transparent Braille Computer Keyboard for Iris. We will also be installing a screen reader software to help her follow her classes.

The RIA strives to be an inclusive learning environment. “The fact that she is blind was not an obstacle for us to enroll her in the course with other kids. I wasn´t sure if we had the tools to help her in the learning process but I was glad to take the risk and today it´s already been 8 weeks since she started and she is doing very well”, says Dulce Bobadilla, Iris’ English teacher.

En el reporte de esta vez, queremos presentarles Iris López Martínez, una pequeña de 11 años quien es invidente y toma clases de Inglés en uno de nuestros centros RIA (Red de Innovación y Aprendizaje) [www.ria.org.mx].

Iris cursa 5to grado y estudia en una escuela primaria pública en una pequeña localidad llamada Santiaguito Coaxuxtenco. Ella decidió estudiar Inglés luego de haber participado en un concurso de canto patrocinada por la Fundación en la que aprende Braille, allí nadie hablaba español, sólo Inglés y por lo tanto le impedía a Iris comunicarse con los otros participantes.

En junio sus padres la inscribieron al curso de Inglés en la RIA en un municipio cercano a su casa, Tenango del Valle. Iris se ha integrado muy bien con los otros 7 niños del grupo, ha logrado aprender rápido y siguiendo el paso de sus compañeros, a veces llega a ser más rápida que el resto de la clase.

Con los recursos que hemos logrado recaudar a través de GlobalGiving, logramos comprar un teclado braille transparente para la computadora que usa Iris. También instalaremos un software de lectura en su computadora para ayudarla a seguir sus clases.

La RIA se esfuerza por ser un espacio inclusivo de aprendizaje. “ El hecho de que sea ciega no fue un obstáculo para aceptarla en nuestro curso con otros chicos. No estaba segura si tendría las herramientas necesarias para apoyarla en su proceso de aprendizaje pero estaba dispuesta a asumir el riesgo y hoy ya llevamos 8 semanas desde que comenzó su curso y va muy bien”, dice Dulce Bobadilla, facilitadora de Inglés en la RIA a cargo del curso de Iris.
