With the dawn of the New Year we would like to thank our donors for the generous support they have shown to meet the unmet need of family planning among the poor couples in India. Through your support, HLFPPT has been able to initiate its program for supporting women and eligible couples from poor and marginalized communities in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, addressing their family planning and birth spacing concerns and services.
During the last quarter through your support we have supported Sheila and other couples with family planning and birth spacing solutions. Sheila has been married since past 3 years and has a 3 year old daughter Radha. Her husband is a vegetable hawker and is the sole earning member in the family. Looking at her family conditions she wanted some family planning services for adequate spacing. The financial pressures of the family, led Sheila to find out about family planning for the first time.
Sheila says, “By stopping having more children we as a couple would be able to give more attention to our daughter.” Two-third of the peri-urban slum population of Uttar Pradesh, have limited access to even basic health services. Sheila is fortunate though; each month a Merrytarang Outreach community Worker visits her community to provide access to life-changing family planning services.
During one of these visits, Sheila approached the team and they counseled her on a range of modern family planning methods, including condoms, the pill and long acting permanent methods. Also, she introduced her to Amrit Corner for more clinical consultation.
This led Sheila to attend one of the OPD sessions at Amrit Corner. With the doctor’s and Family planning counselor services, she made a life-changing decision and chose IUCD insertion for a period of 5 years.
After the procedure, she shared her relief: ‘I am very happy its’ done safely. I didn’t feel any pain and I’ m very happy with the services provided at the Amrit Corner.”
Sheila is one of the few lucky ones. Millions of women and poor family couples still do not have access to modern contraception and continue to die and fall into poverty spiral of having big families with limited resources to sustain.
