Male participation in improving the reproductive health of couples is crucial. India observed Vasectomy Fortnight in last month of 2017. The observation of a dedicated fortnight was intended to galvanize awareness on male sterilization and thereby improve its acceptance in the community.
In India, Male sterilisation’s share in family planning methods is 0.62% despite being safer, quicker and easier. Cultural taboos tend to put the onus of family planning on women.
At HLFPPT, we believe that family planning is also men’s responsibility. We has been continuously striving to change this proportion by implementing innovative strategies for greater male involvement in family planning. In order to support Vasectomy fortnight, focused efforts was made by HLFPPT to promote male participation in Reproductive Health and Family Planning across 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh (UP). UP has highest TFR in the country.
We promoted better male involvement through better awareness and quality service provision by leveraging our MerryGold Health Network (MGHN). HLFPPT team reached out to every locality of the state from Agra, Meerut, Etah, shahjahanpur districts of Western UP to Chandauli, Varanasi districts of eastern UP. Grassroot level awareness campaigns on male participation was carried out in different districts of UP. Community members were counseled to avail Vasectomy services for promoting a world where men make family planning a key household agenda. HLFPPT team helped community to address the misconceptions around Vasectomy for promoting male participation
Success stories had been experienced by HLFPPT from different districts of Uttar Pradesh during and after the Vasectomy Fortnight. Vasectomy surgeries has been done successfully across uttar Pradesh. One of such district is Bahraich U.P. where 6 Male sterilization was done. We are excited to see more and more men welcoming this decision into their lives.
