Every summer, Waypoint selects a goal or theme that we build our summer programs around. This year is the Summer of Belonging. We are called to think more intently about what it means to belong. We might think of belonging as being part of a family, a club, a sports team, or being a welcome member of some other community.
When we belong to a group we may feel good, happy, calm, joyful, and safe. But, when we don’t feel that we belong we may feel sad, reticent, upset, scared, or even angry. We have identified 3 key reasons why belonging is essential:
1) Emotional and mental well-being: Belonging helps reduce feelings of loneliness and anxiety. When people feel connected to others, they experience greater happiness, self-worth, and emotional stability.
2) Motivation and performance: Whether at school, work, or with friends, a sense of belonging boosts motivation, engagement, and productivity. People are more likely to contribute, take risks, and collaborate when they feel accepted and valued.
3) Identity and self-understanding: Belonging gives people a context in which they can understand who they are. It helps shape identity, provides a sense of purpose, and reinforces values and cultural roots.
The overarching theme that these essential elements of a full life illustrate is that belonging is also the first prerequisite to learning. When we feel true belonging, we can confidently engage with those around us in deep learning about ourselves, others and the world.
Central to Waypoint's mission is mindfully curating a diverse and accessible community where belonging is prioritized. It is step one to awakening youths and adults with disabilities to their willful spirit through the power of adventure. It is the foundation upon which we guide participants to discovering their purpose, value, strengths, and abilities. It is how “I can’t” becomes “Yes, I can!”
Please consider joining us and supporting our community. There are three great ways anyone can support belonging at Waypoint: donate, volunteer or participate! If you ever find yourself in eastern Massachusetts or North Carolina please look us up, visit the office, or join us on a program. We would love to meet you – everyone belongs at Waypoint.
