It's spring in New England. Lots of people are pulling bicycles out of their garages and going for rides. This past Saturday Waypoint launched a new program type, Tandem Cycling, as a way to make this exciting adventure accessible to everyone.
These adventures will be part of the Waypiont Adventure Club (WAC). Started in 2018, this club has hiked, backpacked, cycled, and rock-climbed all over the Greater Boston area and into NH.
Most Waypoint program require the support of volunteers, but we are working towards an ideal world where people with and without disabilities would naturally find opportunities to adventure together. The WAC is about all people, regardless of ability, having the opportunity to share the rewards of challenging experiences together.
Everyone on Saturday's program paid a $20 registration fee. Some folks rode as Captains on the front of a tandem and others rode as Stokers on the back. Regardless, everyone was challenged to work together, communicate, and get into the flow/rythmn of riding together. It was am awesome day!
One young woman in her early 30s said at the end of the day, "I haven't ridden a bike since I was 12. I've been too nervous. Today I was nervous at the beginning because I didn't know my partner. But, my word for the day was trust. And, we had a great time riding together."
