In Yemen, after over a decade of intense armed conflict, youth are continuously forced into armed groups or join out of necessity to ease their families' economic burden. To resolve this, we work on the ground to provide rehabilitation and reintegration programs as well as basic medication and food for young individuals who have been held in special detention centers. By addressing these root causes, we empower them to reclaim their futures and contribute to lasting peace in their communities.
As of 2025, over a decade of conflict in Yemen has displaced 4.8 million people, leaving 19.5 million in need of humanitarian assistance. A key driver is continued forced or economical recruitment of young people into armed groups, deepening communities division through Radicalization. Furthermore, a severe lack of mental health services and reintegration support for defected youth from armed groups increases the risk of re-radicalization, further exacerbating the conflict situation.
Since early 2021, we have implemented holistic deradicalization, reintegration, and reconciliation programs for young detainees. Our approach combines deradicalization, psychosocial support, community reconciliation, basic education, vocational training, and interfaith dialogue sessions. To ensure lasting impact, we also provide continuous follow-up support. By supporting individuals in their transition to becoming agents of peace, we contribute to sustainable peace in Yemen.
To date, we have provided rehabilitation and social reintegration programmes to more than 850 young detainees in Yemen. Through our work, many young people move away from violence, identify alternative pathways, and transform as agents of peace. Such initiatives remain critically limited due to their complexity and resource constraints, despite the urgent need. With continued support, our approach can serve as a vital foundation for breaking cycles of violence and sustainable peace in Yemen.
