This time, we would like to share an update on the language classes we have started in Taiz Governorate—and how your support can help us expand them.
Language Education Classes in Taiz Governorate
Taiz Governorate has been deeply affected by prolonged conflict, which has caused many civilian casualties.
At a detention facility in Taiz, we support young detainees who were directly involved in conflict. Our rehabilitation and reintegration work has included providing daily essentials, installing bookshelves, offering vocational training and counseling, and supporting learning and personal development.
As part of these efforts, we have started Arabic and English classes for the young people at the facility. Many have had little opportunity to attend school, whether because they were recruited into armed groups at a young age or because their families could not afford education. Some have therefore had limited opportunities to develop basic literacy skills.
The Arabic classes help participants strengthen skills they can use in everyday life. We also teach English to broaden their opportunities to learn and access information. We hope these skills will continue to serve them after their release. To support the classes, we provide textbooks and stationery.
We selected two participants to serve as peer educators. Learning from someone they know and trust can make it easier for others to ask questions and stay engaged. For the peer educators themselves, teaching is an opportunity to develop their skills and confidence. We hope to support all participants in finding ways to use their abilities and contribute to their communities after release.
Participants have shared what the classes mean to them:
A young person attending the classes:
“I believe selecting a lecturer from among the detainees is very meaningful. He is someone we can speak with freely, and I can see that he is working hard to teach in a way that helps us learn. Also, not only in the classroom, but he continues to follow up even inside the cell.”
“Before, I had completely lost hope and was in despair, but thanks to this program, I have come to hope again. Every class I attend, I feel that I am growing.”
A young person serving as a peer educator:
“I deeply thank you for believing in us and giving me this precious opportunity to be a lecturer. Because of this, I have been able to gain confidence. Thank you very much to Accept International and to all the donors. Until now, I felt that nobody in society cared about us, but thanks to all of you I can have hope. I ask for your continued support.”
These classes have begun to create opportunities for learning, connection, and renewed hope. We now want to expand this work so that more young people can take part. Your donation will help us provide learning materials and continue language education as part of our rehabilitation and reintegration support.
Together, we can help more young people develop their abilities and build a future beyond conflict.
