Amach Looks Toward the Future

By Madeline Balser | Development Manager

Amach is a 21-year-old refugee from South Sudan. Amach fled her home country in 2013 due to war. During the difficult journey, she was separated from her parents and six siblings. Amach was exposed to physical abuse and was treated very poorly by the family she was staying with. Amach was eventually able to reunite with her mother and lived in the Kakuma Refugee camp from 2016-2021. Her family eventually found a husband for her and Amach moved to Nairobi to marry and live with him. Unfortunately, Amach's husband is blind which has put her in a difficult financial position. She found herself always in the house alone while her husband was in class at college. She felt hopeless and was sad that she never got to complete her KCPE. When Amach spent several hours alone, her mind would drift to the traumatic events that happened to her and her family.

In 2023, Amach heard about RefuSHE's campus and Girls Empowerment Program (GEP) from her cousin. Amach was able to join the GEP and is currently attending Grade 3 Tailoring. Amach hopes to ones day start a salon business as she enjoys making wigs and braiding. Her wish is to make enough money to support her mother who still resides in the Kakuma camp. Since joining RefuSHE's programming, Amach has made good friends on campus and during the weekends she braids hair to support herself. Amach's hopeful story is a testimony to her own resilience and RefuSHE is proud to support and inspire her journey.
