Aline Pursues Her Dreams

By Madeline Balser | Development & Communications Coordinator

Aline is a 22 year old young woman from the Democratic Republic of Congo. She joined RefuSHE’s Girls Empowerment Program in 2019. In the Congo, she attended school until grade IV before fleeing her country. At RefuSHE, Aline recently completed Grade II Tailoring where she was the top student in her class. Her favorite subject is Math as she finds it easy to study and apply. She finds History to be the most challenging subject because it is hard to recall information about past events and dates.

RefuSHE’s Girls Empowerment Program (GEP) involves a specialized alternative curriculum which prepares students to sit for their Kenya Certificate for Primary Education (KCPE). The GEP also includes life-skills development including topics on sexual and reproductive health, sexual and gender-based violence prevention, peace building, leadership and human rights, and community collaboration.

Aline is currently training to join RefuSHE’s Artisan Collective, our social enterprise which allows refugee women to achieve economic and social independence. Outside of school, Aline enjoys hanging out with friends and attending church. She finds inspiration from her older brother who motivates her when she is facing challenging times or feels like giving up.

Aline’s dream is to one day run her own fashion and tailoring business. RefuSHE is proud to support the protection, education, and empowerment of refugee girls like Aline so they may pursue their dreams.
