After almost two years of talking, planning and fundraising, we have finally broken ground on the new school at Mkamenyi Primary!
A fortnight ago our project team were at the school to mark out the footings for the first parts of the new school. Since then, in between seasonal rain showers and storms, we have managed to make good progress and the foundations are coming up well.
Over the coming months we will be focusing on building two entirely new parts of the school – a twin-classroom extension to an existing classroom block, and a 450 square metre administration block housing the staffroom, four office spaces, two classrooms and a multi-purpose library/ICT/meeting room.
Once these are in a position where they can be occupied (even if not entirely finished), large parts of the existing school will be condemned and demolished to make way for other new buildings including further classrooms, a dining hall and kitchen, and assembly ground.
We are, of course, relieved that work has finally started and that we are on the way to delivering on another promise but it is just the start of a long road and there is still at least two years of building work ahead of us, not to mention the small matter of another £150,000 still to raise!
