A great start: healthy pregnancy & birth in Kosovo

Thanks to your generous support, we have been able to continue providing essential educational and support activities for  women in our community. Your contributions have made it possible to create a safe and welcoming space where women can access reliable health information, share experiences, and receive guidance during some of the most important stages of their lives.

Over the past three months, regular group sessions and discussions have been organized with women, focusing on maternal and child health topics that are often difficult to access due to social and economic barriers. These meetings have given participants the opportunity to learn, ask questions, and gain confidence in making informed decisions about their own health and the well-being of their children.

The topics discussed included pregnancy and childbirth, with special attention to the first trimester of pregnancy, common physical and emotional changes, the importance of antenatal care, proper nutrition, and recognizing warning signs that require medical attention. Participants also learned about preparing for labor and delivery, postpartum recovery, and self-care during the period of motherhood.

Breastfeeding was another important subject covered during these sessions. Women received practical advice on exclusive breastfeeding, breastfeeding techniques, managing common challenges, and understanding the long-term benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and child.

In addition, participants were informed about childhood vaccination schedules and the critical role immunization plays in protecting children from preventable diseases. Family planning and contraceptive methods were discussed in detail, helping women understand their options and empowering them to make choices that best suit their personal and family circumstances.

Discussions also addressed the harmful effects of smoking during pregnancy, emphasizing the risks associated with tobacco use for both the mother and the developing baby. Pregnancy planning, healthy lifestyles, and preconception care were encouraged as important steps toward ensuring safer pregnancies and healthier families.

Throughout these three months, women received continuous advice and counseling regarding pregnancy, the postpartum period, newborn care, breastfeeding, child nutrition, and early childhood development. Beyond the medical information shared, these gatherings have fostered a sense of community, mutual support, and empowerment among participants.
