200 YOUNG KIDS BACK AGAIN IN DAY CARE CENTERS

Day Care kids are back again in Day Care Centers to hone their mental abilities as preparation before they enter into formal school. Close to 200 young kids ages 2-5 years in Tacloban City were excited when they saw their new Day Care Centers colorfully painted with brand new chairs and tables.

Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc. (CJFI), a Philippine based child care foundation in partnership with Global Giving constructed three (3) new day care centers in Tacloban City as a long term strategy to address the shortage of Day Care Centers after the whole city of Tacloban was badly destroyed by Super Typhoon Yolanda. A Day Care Center is a community-based learning facility for young children age 2-5. For 2 hours from Monday to Friday, the kids are provided with mental and physical exercises in Day Care Center supervise by a Day Care Worker to develop their potentials before they enter into formal school.

The Day Care Center Project was duly coordinated with the City Government of Tacloban through the City Social Services Department (CSSDO). The LGU of Tacloban identified the sites of the day care centers. A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was made to establish the clear functions of the parties involved. These centers are located in Barangays Nula Tula, Fatima, and Sabang Danguitan.

Because of budget constraint faced by the City, Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc. took the responsibility of providing the monthly allowance of the Day Care Workers for at least the next twelve (12) months. The City Social Services Department of Tacloban City lauded CJFI for this support as it is very vital in sustaining the activities of Day Care Center.

A  Day Care Worker of Fatima Village Day Care Center with 91 kids enrolled was very grateful to CJFI and Global Giving for this project. She said that without this new Day Care building, it would be very hard for her to do her duty because there is no available shelter in the community where she can meet the kids and hold the day care activities. The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Tacloban City has so many priorities in rebuilding the city but because of limited resources, it is unable to respond to all the needs of the constituents at the same time, and I thank God because many local and foreign groups have been supporting the rehabilitation efforts of Tacloban City, the Worker said.

From 35 kids in her center last year, it increased to 91 attributed mainly to lack of day care facilities in the city as most of the structures were ruined by Typhoon Yolanda. The enrollees came from nearby three barangays that have no day care center at the moment. In an effort to give the kids ample time and attention, Madeleine divided the 91 kids in three groups with a minimum of 2 hours per group. One group of 30 kids will attend the class from 8:30-10:30; another group at 11:00-1:00; and the last group from 1:30-3:30.
