The Sunshine Preschools end of the year celebrations held at the school compound was just over when the rains came down. We were more than fortunate that the celebrations were held, that the children were able to perform at the concert for parents and invitees, receive their graduation certificates and also their end-year gifts. It was just in time - for days later, the storm caused heavy flooding and landslides, killing over 800 people and causing over US$ 1.6 billion dollars of damage in the country. It was the deadliest disaster since the 20024 Incian Ocean tsunami. Over 275,000 children are among the 1.4 million people affected by cyclone Ditwah.
Sri Lanka’s education system is among the casualties of Cyclone Ditwah, with severe damage to school and preschool infrastructure, while some have been converted into shelters, disrupting the resumption of learning nationwide. Though the sunshine preschool building and roof were not heavily damaged, the beating of the water destroyed much of the educational material and learning tools. The timely funding received will help enormously to support the project 2026 Educational Needs for Children. We thank you for your generosity and are truly grateful that we can move forward in the new year. We are ready to welcome our children and continue providing early childhood learning at the preschool.
