Teach 400 Illiterate Girls: Guatemala
"We are Grateful! God Bless you!"
A chorus of gratitude from mothers who want a better life for their daughters than the life they have. Lucia, age 35 says "I never studied. My parents didn't give me the opportunity to go to school and that is the reason that now I am the mother of 10 children. You have given me and my daughters HOPE for their future. You have given my daughters an opportunity to learn a skill that will allow them to survive and live a better life.”
The Education Casa: A community donor has provided a comfortable CASA with electricity, water and bathroom for a nominal monthly fee. Your donations have paid for internet. Two computers, a projector and video camera are provided by Bright Star Philanthropy Partners. These will be used to develop vocational skill instructions on video in the Ixil language. A teacher has been hired.
Clean Kitchens and Healthy Vegetable Recipes: The Education Casa has no stove. Your donations will pay for a local entrepreneur and parents to build a clean stove to use for demonstrations and lessons.
Vocational Skills: All instruction will be in the Mayan language of Ixil Maya and developed for girls who do not read or write. Volunteers will meet with small groups of girls in the Education Casa to teach marketable skills, such as basket weaving, jewelry making, commercial sewing, and family kitchen gardens. The girls will have an opportunity to attend workshops on leadership, health, gender equity and other classes developed as needed over the next year. You will receive regular reports on this project. Some photos may appear blurry. It is the reult of the 24/7 wood smoke used for the wood fires built on the floor in most homes to use for cooking, light and heat.
