In Detroit, City Year corps members serve as a bridge from the school day to after-school hours to reinforce learning and provide students, who otherwise would have no safe or appropriate afterschool options, with a safe place to go after-school. Corps members provide students with educational and enrichment programming after-school, 4-5 days/week, from 3:00-5:30p, resulting in 350 additional hours of learning day - the equivalent of 50 school days - to support student academic and life success.
Children who are unsupervised after school are at risk of falling behind academically, socially and emotionally. They are also at higher risk for substance abuse, gang involvement, teen pregnancy and school dropout. Through City Year's after school program, City Year corps members are able to extend the learning day and provide a safe, structured, academically enriching environment for students, 4-5 days each week, from approximately 3:00-5:30pm.
In Detroit, City Year corps members provide after-school interventions to complement the school's instruction and provide a safe place for students during after-school hours. Students - very often the same ones tutored by City Year during the school day - participate in character development curriculum, individualized learning for math and ELA, and hands-on enrichment initiatives to build their critical thinking and problem solving skills - skills needed to succeed in school and beyond.
Students who progress to 10th grade with their peers are four times more likely to graduate than students who fall behind. Our Long-Term Impact goal is to serve the majority of at-risk students in Detroit, and ensure that 80% of those students reach 10th grade on track and on time. Extending the learning day at each partner school by 350 hours (equivalent of 50 school days) for students who need it most will help unlock their potential and maximize impact on their academic and life success.
