United on Wheels for World Patient Safety Day 2025

A microproject by Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research Ltd/Gte
United on Wheels for World Patient Safety Day 2025

Summary

Unsafe medical practices cause millions of avoidable injuries and deaths worldwide each year. In Nigeria, weak patient safety standards contribute to rising hospital infections and preventable harm. To mark World Patient Safety Day 2025, we will organize a public bike ride in Abuja, visiting the WHO Country Office, Federal Ministry of Health, and National Hospital to draw attention to safer care. This project creates awareness, engages communities, and gives a voice to patients often overlooked.

Challenge

Unsafe medical care causes an estimated 2.6 million deaths annually worldwide, with most cases in low- and middle-income countries. In Nigeria, weak infection control, overcrowded hospitals, and limited safety training increase the risks. Many patients suffer harm from avoidable errors, yet awareness of patient rights and safety is low. Without strong advocacy, patients remain exposed to preventable illness, disability, and financial loss.

Solution

The bike ride will bring together citizens, health workers, and policymakers to promote patient safety. By visiting the WHO office, Ministry of Health, and National Hospital, we will raise awareness, share patient experiences, and call for stronger safety standards. Flyers, banners, and direct engagement with leaders will highlight the need for safer practices. The event will place patient safety on the public agenda and stimulate conversation about safer healthcare delivery.

Long-Term Impact

The event will build public awareness and push decision-makers to prioritize safer healthcare. Patients and families will gain knowledge about their rights, while health workers and policymakers will be reminded of their duty to reduce preventable harm. Continued visibility can encourage better training, safer practices, and stronger policies. This will contribute to reducing avoidable deaths and create momentum for improved patient protection across Nigeria.
