This microproject supports Tz'utujil Maya women artisans in Santiago Atitlan by providing them with health and education cards for their families, as well as workshops that promote their personal and economic empowerment. It helps artisans access medicines, school supplies for their children, and new training, creating opportunities to improve their well-being and preserve their cultural heritage.
In Santiago Atitlan the ancient art of backstrap weaving is undervalued, leaving artisans-mostly Tz'utujil Maya women-with limited access to healthcare, professional development and opportunities to support their children's education. Many weavers must choose between paying for medicine or school supplies, while their physically demanding work takes a toll on their health. This project addresses the need for comprehensive support to improve the well-being of artisans and empower their families.
This microproject will provide direct support to 35 artisans through Cojolya's Mano a Mano program. Health cards will allow artisans to access local pharmacies and medical consultations when necessary. Education cards will help their children purchase school supplies. Workshops on gender equality, rights, and personal development will boost women's confidence, while vocational training and entrepreneurship support will help artisans diversify their income and achieve economic independence.
By addressing artisans' health, education, personal development and economic empowerment together, this project lays the foundation for sustainable change. Healthier, more confident artisans can continue their craft, support their families, and share their knowledge with future generations. Over time, these efforts will strengthen the role of Tz'utujil Maya women as leaders, preserving their cultural heritage and creating pathways to a more equitable and resilient community.
