The Rooster Book

A microproject by VINE
The Rooster Book

Summary

Drawing on VINE Sanctuary's 20+ years of working with roosters, The Rooster Book will educate the general public about the world's most misunderstood birds while providing shelters and sanctuaries with the information they need to care for rescued roosters--including birds who have been traumatized by cockfighting. By undermining the myth about roosters that reflect and naturalize gender stereotypes, this book also will aid in ending gender-based violence.

Challenge

After 20+ years of rescuing roosters, VINE Sanctuary is ready to tell the world what we have learned! The Rooster Book: A Field Guide to the World's Most Misunderstood Birds will include engaging information for the general public along with detailed instructions for caring for rescued roosters -- including birds traumatized by cockfighting. We need your help to cover the costs of designing and printing the book and then shipping free copies to shelters and sanctuaries.

Solution

The immediate impact of this microproject will be to put information in the hands of people who will use it to help animals. The free distribution of The Rooster Book to shelters and sanctuaries will give animal rescuers the information they need to ensure the well-being of any roosters in their care AND expand the number of roosters they are able to rescue. This will reduce the number of birds who die because there is nowhere for them to go.

Long-Term Impact

Myths about roosters drive the cruel blood sport of cockfighting and also lead people who keep backyard chickens to discard roosters. Those myths also contribute to the idea that it is natural for boys and men to behave violently. By telling the truth about roosters to the general public, The Rooster Book will help to change the ideas that people have about roosters and challenge them to think about gender stereotypes too. This will help both people and animals.
