Our blog, re/present: live. learn. lead., is written by and for recipients of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) and APIASF/Gates Millennium Scholars Program scholarships. This virtual space trumps geographic distance and allows our Scholars to find resources and connect as they share their lived experiences, discuss issues and topics of interest, and explore what it means to be an Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and/or Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Scholar and leader.
The AANHPI community faces some unique challenges: notable and accomplished AANHPIs are frequently absent from public consciousness; the vastly diverse AANHPI experience is often collapsed into a singular experience; and definitions of leadership are regularly grounded in the values of Western European cultures, which may differ from other worldviews. Our blog seeks to address these issues by highlighting AANHPI leaders and providing a safe space for our Scholars to explore their identity.
If fully funded, this project will provide internship stipends to two students who will focus on maintaining, innovating, and improving our blog. These internships will be culturally-relevant opportunities to cultivate communications and marketing skills that foster their professional development. By supporting student involvement in the blog, we will maintain a fresh and relevant voice and ensure that the blog is sustainable and available for future Scholars and Alumni.
These internships will provide two students the opportunity to develop skills and gain experience that meet or support their personal and professional goals. In addition, their work on our blog will have a larger impact as they facilitate the dissemination of resources and opportunities to our Scholars (and students everywhere) that focus on academic success, leadership development, and professional development.
