Start 1,000 Gardens in Tacloban

We’d like to warmly thank you for your gifts to help us start 1,000 gardens in Tacloban.

Before Typhoon Haiyan, many families grew their own vegetables. But Haiyan washed away or contaminated most of the soil and destroyed the majority of seeds. This has made restarting gardens impossible.

Vegetables are very expensive in Tacloban, so since the storm many families have just been going without. Less nutritious food means that people are weaker and more prone to illness.

Working with our Filipino partners, Bayanihan Tayo, we’re helping survivors grow their own vegetables by providing communal gardens, planting workshops and urban garden starter kits. This project is helping families become more food secure while also promoting the Filipino spirit of Bayanihan (unity and cooperation) through communal gardening.

To date, we have established a permanent nursery, developed our first community garden and started running gardening workshops. The workshops include information on key principles, like how to create and use organic fertilizers and insecticides which are safe, reliable and inexpensive. So far, our workshops have been attended by 653 survivors.

In other words – thanks to you we’re well on our way to our goal of starting 1,000 gardens in Tacloban!
