Every Friday, staff and children from the Clubhouse in Kampala walk to a nearby football pitch. Here, a football tournament begins between staff, boys, and any children in the nearby area.
Through football, Retrak staff are able to engage street children new to the Retrak programme. Football enables them to gain trust, reach out, and enter informal conversations with boys about the issues they may be facing. Playing football also enhances the boys' self esteem and promotes friendship.
After the matches, the Retrak staff use the opportunity to gather all of the children around and tell them more about what the Retrak programme can offer them - food, counselling, shelter and education. Football acts as an ice-breaker to these services. Then, one Friday a month, the staff invite all of the children back to the Clubhouse for lunch. Last week this involved feeding over 120 children! Some of these children then choose to stay overnight at the centre, beginning their journey back home to Retrak.
