What better way is there to put a smile on a child's face than to remember them during the holidays? Well, there actually is a better way - including their entire family in the joys of the holiday season!
Live and Learn in Kenya Int'l not only makes sure that every one of the 460 childen on the program receive holiday presents - their families do as well. It isn't easy - or even possible for these families to be able to afford a typical holiday meal when they are earning less than $2 a day. Feeding their children at all is a daily struggle.
Every year Live and Learn in Kenya Int'l provides the makings for the entire family's holiday meal. The holiday package includes polenta for the well-loved ugali, cabbages, carrots, flour for chapatis, oil for cooking, some sweets - and a live chicken. It is such a joy to see the Mamas coming to get the food and literally dancing and singing in the streets all the way home. If you've ever had to worry about how to afford a holiday meal for your family, you will truly understand the profoundness of the happiness of being given what you need to make your family happy.
But there's more! The Live and Learn in Kenya Int'l team chooses new holiday presents for the children every year.
We have given them clothing, schoolbags with umbrellas (for the hot sun and the cold rain!) books and blankets in the past. We had to come to the conclusion that blankets are a necessity. Many families don't even have a bed for their children to sleep in. Old clothing is laid out on the cold, dirt floor and they sleep in their clothes. For this reason we decided to give the children blankets every other year. This way they have blankets to lay on and blankets to cover themselves with.
This year is a 'blanket year'. So your holiday donation not only fills tummies - it keeps them warm!
Yes, the joy of giving is the joy of living. You will be making people smile at the knowledge of not being forgotten this holiday season.
Happy holidays!
