Sensory equipment for disabled children in Moldova

A microproject by St Gregory's Foundation
Sensory equipment for disabled children in Moldova

Summary

There is very little support for disabled children and their families in rural Moldova. So the Dorintsa (The Wish) centre is the only place in Calarasi district that families can turn. We provide therapy and accessible education for 30 children. Many of these children have sensory needs: the world often seems too loud or too chaotic and they need calming sensory input. Alternatively, they may need help to stimulate their senses. Sensory equipment can be transformative for these children.

Challenge

Many of the children we support have sensory needs. The world is either too loud and chaotic, or not stimulating enough. This can be distressing for children and can lead to difficult behaviour. Sadly, it is impossible to buy much of the sensory equipment we need in Moldova so we will need to order from abroad.

Solution

Sensory equipment such as light up bubble tubes provide just the right amount of sensory input for our children helping us calm children who are overstimulated. Other equipment such as balance disks can help our children develop the senses that help them balance. Sensory boards can help young children develop fine motor skills, the co-ordination that is needed for writing, dressing and other skills. Fully equipped we will be able to offer quality therapy and education to our children.

Long-Term Impact

Your support will improve the quality of life of children with disabilities from the Calarashi region, giving them the chance to communicate, make friends, and benefit from social integration and greater independence. Children with disabilities who are at risk of dropping out of school or kindergarten will be encouraged to attend and/or given alternative educational support. Families will be given specialist advice and will be empowered to find the most suitable education for their children.
