Summary

For 10 years Bhongolethu has grown from 20 children to a full school of 150, giving township kids in Cape Town what a 400 a month private school offers, instead of 60 to 1 classrooms where most can't read by Grade 4. We're finally being approved for government funding that would make us self sufficient forever. But approval is slow, and we're $8,000 short of holding on this month. Without this, 150 children lose the school built over a decade, right before it becomes permanent.

Challenge

Township families in Cape Town earn an average of $400 a month, while private primary school costs around $500 a month, putting quality education completely out of reach. The alternative is a government school with 60 children to 1 teacher, where 80% of classrooms lack basic equipment and 82% of children cannot read by Grade 4. Without urgent funding, Bhongolethu risks being unable to sustain operations through this final administrative stretch, right as it stands on the edge of full sustainable

Solution

Bhongolethu already delivers what's needed: 20 children to 1 teacher plus a teaching assistant, daily breakfast for all 150 children, and a full primary curriculum from Grade R to Grade 7. The school's government registration application is complete and submitted. Bridge funding of 6,000 keeps the school fully operational while approval is finalised, after which government funding of 110 per child per year makes Bhongolethu permanently self sufficient.
