Our microproject for the Angkor Empire Half Marathon and 10km distance has now closed and we would like to share with you our final reprot....After months of training and many circuits of the Royal Park in the center of town race day was soon upon us. The team were up bright and early – as due to the heat race days begin at the crack of dawn here. The day itself was great fun and the team were very proud to have met their challenge! There were definitely some aching legs over the following few days, but the team were sure it was worth it in order to raise over $520 in total to support the women and girls of Siem Reap. The team are also excited to share that they will now take on the half marathon / 10k in December in order to raise even more for WRC!
Thank you for being a part of this – your funds will support WRC in providing these women and girls with emotional support, referral services, and informal education so they can be empowered to make informed decisions about their lives.
These donations allow us to support women like An and her husband, Mao, who farm a small plot of land near the famed ruins of Angkor in Cambodia. The couple, who were forced to end their education after the third grade, often struggled to provide for their family of five so when given the opportunity to join a financial literacy class they jumped at the chance.
After participating in classes these classes An and Mao began saving and a year later were able to buy a motorbike. The purchase, which had previously been out of reach, increased the family’s mobility and time savings. Riding the motorbike also built An’s confidence and facilitated her involvement in WRC’s network promoting training and education.
Beyond the practical benefits of attending trainings on financial literacy, parenting, health and domestic violence, An and Mao express appreciation for having the opportunity to engage in education again after so many years. “WRC has skills to teach people with little education,” says An who plans to continue expanding her horizons!

With thanks, The WRC team!
