Summary

This project will rebuild the roof of Colibries, a temporary home for children in Buenos Aires who have been removed from unsafe environments. After an unprecedented storm flooded the shelter, children were left living in emergency conditions. Repairing the roof will restore safety and warmth, allow the shelter to function fully again, and ensure these children have a dignified space to rest, recover, and continue healing from past trauma.

Challenge

During a single night in May, Buenos Aires was hit by a storm that dropped 80% of the city's average monthly rainfall-between 50 and 90 mm-causing massive damage. Colibries' roof was severely damaged, flooding bedrooms and hallways. Children were displaced, electricity was cut, and admissions were halted. The shelter, which provides refuge from abuse and neglect, is no longer safe without urgent structural repairs.

Solution

The funds will allow us to fully repair the damaged roof and improve water drainage to prevent future floods. This will make bedrooms, play areas, and common spaces safe and livable again. The shelter can resume caring for vulnerable children, offering them protection, emotional support, and a dignified place to recover. Rebuilding the roof is the first step toward restoring stability for the kids and staff.

Long-Term Impact

This project will ensure that Colibries can continue its mission of protecting and caring for children who have survived extreme hardship. Once repaired, the shelter will offer safe housing to up to 17 children at a time. It will also prevent future water damage, preserving the infrastructure for years. Most importantly, it will give every child who enters a chance to heal in a secure, loving, and resilient home.
