CONCERN Nepal will identify 10 children working in brick kilns in Kathmandu Valley and provide them funding for tuition, uniforms, and school supplies. The costs for education are small, $30 in tuition and exam fees, $50 for uniforms, and $30 for supplies, but they are prohibitively expensive for the families of these children. By funding the education of children vulnerable to hazardous labor you will protect them from future exploitation
It is estimated 60,000 children are working in brick kilns within Nepal. Parents employed by the brick kilns do not have the money to pay for school or child care, so the children often end up making bricks alongside their parents. The work is hazardous and illegal, but is expected to continue as long as parents cannot afford other alternatives.
CONCERN can help families afford to send their children to school, so that they will no longer be vulnerable to exploitation. Education will not only serve as an alternative to manual labor, but will give beneficiaries the chance at a better life. $150 covers the cost of education for one child for an entire year.
By providing these children with funding for their education they will have more options for safe and reliable employment in the future. Educating one child within a family can also have an impact on other children in the family. Ram, a beneficiary of CONCERN, now encourages his younger brother and sister to go to school, as well.
