Dear Donors,
Thank you for your donations and support—with the amount you have raised, we were able to install a four stall accessible latrine at Ogul Primary School. After watching the accessible latrine progress from a hole in the ground to a fully painted structure, Ogul Primary School students were excited and eager to see it put to use. I was happy that I got to attend the handing over ceremony for the accessible toilet. The ceremony brought together school leadership, community leaders, and local government offcials who, along with the students and staff of Ogul, celebrated the completion of the accessible latrine. In addition to building the accessible toilet for students with disabilities at Ogul PS, we were also able to hold two inclusivity trainings for teachers, staff and parents. These trainings helped to dispel any of the misinformation and stigma surrounding disability in the community.
The Gulu municipal government does not have the funds to build accessible latrines in all of the schools that need them. Organizations like the Advocacy Project and the Gulu Disabled Persons Union (GDPU) have stepped in to help. That’s where your donation came in. Through providing safe and accessible toilets for disabled school children, we are able to ensure that more students have access to education. The head teacher, Auma Prisca Oyella, was a huge advocate for this project, and is excited to see enrollment grow at her school as these new facilities bring students back to Ogul. According to Ms. Oyella, the unsafe and unsanitary latrines caused many of the students to leave the school - enrollment in 2016 was 560 students, which dropped to 375 in 2017. We will keep track of the enrollment as well as the sanitation and hygiene at the school to hopefully observe all three of those rates raise in 2018. We will keep you updated as the school continues to use the latrines. So, we want to thank you for your support. Without the support of our donors, our project would not have been nearly as successful as it was, thank you!
Best,
Lauren
