Pens and pencils have been distributed to 150 students at the 3 primary schools served by the parent project, "Educate 150 Children of Rape Victims in DR Congo." AMCAV and school officials decided that extra pens and pencils would be more beneficial for the kids to have than 1 pen and pencil box as originally proposed. The distribution process was ceremonial in nature, with parents as well as school and AMCAV officials present, and speeches were given about how beneficial the parent project is proving to be. Before the school program began, each child was stigmatized because of their birth status. But upon arrival at the schools, AMCAV worked to make sure both the incoming students and the existing students were acclimated and socially accepting of one another. We are working on changing social norms by encouraging parents in the community to send all children regardless of birth status to school. Some of the children in the program have added struggles, including one albino girl and one girl missing fingers.
