Provide hot water to South African children

A microproject by DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage
Provide hot water to South African children

Summary

This project will provide hot water to 350 children per year from one of the the poorest provinces in South Africa. Our camp is in the middle of the bush and we do not have power at the camp. We are looking into a green and eco-friendly way to provide hot water to the children staying at our camp.

Challenge

Each week we welcome 8 underprivileged children from the Limpopo province in our camp in the middle of the African bush for a full week of environmental education program and we provide housing for them We have no power at the camp, so we are mostly burning wood or using gas to supply hot water, which is not only costly but also not the most eco-friendly way to get hot water. Protecting the environment is our main focus, which is why we want to find a green alternative for this.

Solution

At DAKTARI we want to reduce our carbon footprint and save up on our energy bills by using a green and sustainable way to provide hot water. We will leverage the sunlight through solar geysers to turn it into heat. This will align with our values of protecting the environment and providing the best experience to the children who stay at DAKTARI.

Long-Term Impact

After a week at DAKTARI, many children become aware of the importance of their environment. These children go on to take action in their local communities, protecting the nature. We need to be role model and use clean energy in our camp, which is the best tool to achieve sustainable conservation of Africa's beloved natural heritage.
