Summary

Our Verreaux (Black) Eagle 'Jumper' needs food to survive. We feed him chickens, rodents and game. Jumper would like your help of $600 to cover his food and care for a year.

Challenge

Jumper was brought to Daktari in May from another rehabilitation centre in the area. They couldn't keep him anymore, because of space availability. Jumper is a Verraux Eagle that was found on a game reserve with a broken wing. His wing was badly injured, so they decided to amputate. At Daktari we have been taking care of Jumper ever since.

Solution

We provide Jumper with food and care. Verraux Eagles often stands horizontally on their well feathered legs. This posture makes them stocky and powerful. Eagles often occur in pairs, where they claim a territory together. Verraux Eagles love rocky areas and their preferred meal in the wild are dassies. Eagles can see 8 times better than humans, because of that they are excellent hunters.

Long-Term Impact

Jumper has a happy life with our help. It is our goal to provide him with a safe home. He is a great educational medium for the local children we welcome every week. It is important to know that eagles are usually poached because of a lack of knowledge in the villages. A lot of locals think that eagles bring bad luck or will eat their livestock, which usually ends up in shooting them. Having our beloved Verraux Eagle around definitely creates a great impact and compassion on the local children.
