Though NFTE New York Metro fell just short to purchase computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printers to assist our students see their business plans come to life, we forged ahead and were able to obtain CAD programs for our students to use. Thanks to your contributions, we raised over $9,000 through Global Giving to help NFTE’s students with this endeavor. Your support was crucial in helping these students make their business dreams come that much closer to a reality thanks to the CAD software. Thanks again for all you do for our young entrepreneurs.
Two students who were able to use CAD to help design aspects of their businesses were Babacar M. of Brooklyn International High School and Roberto M. of Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School. Babacar developed a product based on his passion for public health. His device, Germ Free Hands, is a handheld protective barrier that prevents exposure to germs on the many grimy surfaces of New York City’s subways. His initial prototype slightly more low-tech, but thanks to his CAD software training he was able to design an updated version that was sturdier and more replicable. With his business plan for Germ Free Hands, Babacar won his classroom business plan competition and advanced to the NFTE New York Metro Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge this summer.
Roberto’s venture was focused on an industry that was valued at $1 billion in 2013: model trains. As the CEO and founder of Metro Model Trains, Roberto plans to create model trains that reproduce the most familiar railway cars from around the world. A student who plans to major in computer and mechanical engineering, CAD design for these trains was instrumental in seeing his designs realized. Roberto also won his classroom competition and participate in the New York Metro Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge. The software funded in part through your Global Giving donations helped these students create better prototypes and help move their businesses that much closer to reality. Thank you again for your donations, which are NFTE New York Metro power young entrepreneurs through some of the most innovative programs in the field.
