Our Forest Mothers are receiving more support, though we are striving to provide more.
Lucy, the Provincial Rural Midwifery lead, was able to visit the remote community to both mentor the village midwives for whom she led the didactic and practical training with her partner midwife, Elizabeth, as well as to provide some sexual and reporductive health education and service delivery.
Among the topics covered was long-acting reversible contraception, the contracpetive implant in particular, which is able to prevent pregnancy for up to five years. There were a few Suowi Ankave women who decided to try out implants--we are awaiting feedback from them about how they like having the implants.
The village midwives are still using the bush material birth house the built with their own hands, and do not yet have solar backpacks. IHS intends to move forward on getting a more sturdy structure for birthing as well as solar midwife backpacks for the village midwives, and to continue sponsoring midwifery mentorship visits to Suowi Valley.
WIth your generous support, these plans will be realized sooner rather than later. We tahnk you sincerely for your ongoing dediation to this model of integrated biological conservation, human health, education and livelihood development.
