SNM is in the process of planting 500 native trees with locals input at Choravane village, Khed taluka, Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, India. Ratnagiri is one of the fastest deforestations among Western ghat district. Western ghat is one of the Biodiversity hotspots of the country which is losing its diversity due to various development projects such as for the expansion of NH17 and NH 66 highway thousands of trees are chopped down.
Selection of Field site - Planting a tree is not only important, but the important is the selection of the place where to plant a tree? Survival of the plant is very important. Considering every constraint and aspect selection of field site was done. The selected field site was the corridor between Choravane village and adjoining forest area.
Selection of trees – Trees are playing a very vital role to maintain ecological balance according to the habitat. It’s very important before plantation need to identify the native plant species of the particular habitat which help to maintain the ecological balance of the place or habitat of the area. Native plants are identified such as Sathvin (Alstonia scholaris), Tamhan(Lagerstroemia speciosa), Kashid(Peltophorum pterocarpum), Pimpal(Ficus religiosa) etc.
50 numbers of native plants SNM had taken on the field at the base Choravane village with other needed material such as fertilizer, guard, and other digging materials. Plantation with the support and involvement of the local villager and with children enthusiasm towards nature and environment under the guidance of SNM is in the process.
