Young girls and women who have escaped sexual slavery by ISIS have now found safe haven and security. That’s because your support helped us to open a brand new shelter and rape crisis center in Kurdistan—the only one of its kind in the region. We’ve signed the lease on the center and are now equipping the shelter with furniture and other supplies so that it's ready to receive women and girls.
Thanks to your support, this center will do more than meet pressing needs for lifesaving medical care, food and shelter. It will offer counseling, mentorship, literacy programs, job training and human rights education to both residents and the broader community of survivors of abuse. These programs will give girls and women the tools they need to rebuild their lives, in a supportive, loving environment
Already, MADRE’s on the ground partners at the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq have led the first trainings with the women activists who will be in charge of the center. And a group of women who have escaped ISIS captivity have been visiting the center for counseling and literacy trainings.
Thank you so much for supporting this important project! With your help, this center will be a vital resource for women and girls who are rebuilding their lives after trauma. Young girls and women who have survived abduction, repeated rape and enslavement by ISIS will finally remember what it feels like to feel secure and to imagine a safer, happier future.
