This project will supply a new car to Tiljala SHED so that 10,000 starving, sick and homeless people can receive desperately needed relief, in the aftermath of Cyclone Amphan and during the COVID 19 pandemic and India's lockdown.
Since the start of the lockdown, Tiljala SHED has distributed 5650 relief packages to over 3000 families. These families have been left hungry in the COVID -19 because as daily labourers they can't work. In mid-May Cyclone Amphan added to their misery by tearing down their homes. Tiljala SHED's vehicle is old and is now beyond repair. We won't be able to continue distributing vital aid without transportation.
The vehicle is crucial to every part of Tiljala SHED's work and at no time more so than during this global pandemic. Every day we are taking food parcels to the hungry and tarpaulins to the homeless. Having our own vehicle enables us to get the right aid to the right place when it is needed. It also carries our staff and volunteers safely to the field for distributions. Without our vehicle we cannot bring essential relief to Kolkata's hungry and homeless.
Tiljala SHED has worked amongst Kolkata's poorest communities for 30 years. For the last 12 years the current Maruti Suzuki Eeco has been vital to the delivery of all the crucial programmes Tiljala SHED has run over the years. A new vehicle will continue to be a key part of that impact for the next 12 years.
