Angel is a 14 year old boy who has been diagnosed with a kidney failure and has received a prognosis of less than a year. Because of his delicate health situation, he was rejected from regular school and he can't do the things he likes the most. He was encouraged to accept a scholarship to take an English and computing course at the Learning and Innovation Network (RIA), and now it's the one activity that allows him continue learning, make new friends and smile.
Kids that suffer a terminal disease spend a lot of time inside a hospital or their own home not having the opportunity to attend school, play with their friends or just do regular activities they love. Unfortunately, in Mexico there are not enough assistance programs that support these kids or their families. Terminally ill kids and teenagers are excluded from education and the public health system won't cover any outstandig expenses.
By offering high quality educational resources, we'll ensure that Angel realizes a sense of achievement and self-worth through the learning experience. The money raised will help us give Angel the highest quality life possible during his time left and we'll cover both his medical expenses and mentoring. We also will provide his family with counseling and create a positive environment among other pupils and staff working with him.
In under three years more than 240,000 users have registered at the RIA centers and more than 60,000 students have graduated from its courses. We have helped students improve their study techniques, the unemployed find jobs on the Internet and people of all ages learn basic computer skills and how to speak English. With 70 centers in the State of Mexico, the RIA expects to reach approximately 350,000 users by the end of 2012.
