Live and Learn in Kenya International is in the process of building a school for free education for very poor children living in the Nakuru slums. 7 classrooms have been built and the 8th classroom is in construction. The courtyard is very dusty - and when it rains, very, very muddy. Our plan is to have a cobbled courtyard that will be used for morning sports as well as assemblies. International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on April 6th is a good reminder of this importance.
The children - aged 3 to 12 years old - need a dustfree / mudfree place for their morning sports - gymnastics and for their assemblies.
Not only is doing sports in the dust and mud uncomfortable, it is unhealthy and needless to say, they are tracking the mud and dust into the classrooms when the bell rings. It is a huge help that the stones that will be used to cobble the courtyard are coming directly from Nakuru - so it is also helping the local economy. Our goal is also to teach the children the necessity of cleanliness and hygiene.
In nearly 18 years of work in Nakuru we have provided hundreds of children with education, vocational training, nutritious food, foster care for (mostly AIDS) orphans, medical/dental care. Most of the children who have finished their education through LLK now have jobs or are attending universities. Having our own school we can provide high-quality education so that even the poorest of the poor have an equal chance to be all that they can be in life. This will change generations of lives.
