Light for 150 Students

$255 $605
Raised Remaining

EIM aims to help hundreds of students like Alex find work by teaching English as a vocational skill. Alex wants to become a teacher so that he can support his family, but to teach he needs to speak English. Alex is a good student, but he struggles to learn because the school is often without electricity. This also means that the school can't hold evening classes. A generator will help students like Alex stay in school and allow the school to expand.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

More than two thirds of Haitian adults lack formal employment and more than 50% of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day, yet there is actually a shortage of skilled labour in Port au Prince. English speakers can find work but most Haitians cannot afford to attend fee charging language schools. EIM gives students language skills for free, but Port au Prince's electricity supply is simply too unreliable to sustain the school a it often goes out for days at a time.

How will this project solve this problem?

EIM can't hold classes to help students escape poverty without electricity. This project will purchase a generator to provide light, run the class' projectors, and allow evening classes to go forward.

Potential Long Term Impact

By providing the generator, your donations will let more than 150 students like Alex learn the skills they need to find gainful employment and support themselves and their families into the future. This will let the students escape poverty for good.
