To promote the Pollinator Garden at the Miguel Aleman Restoration Site, we keep conducting field trips with students of different grades. Elementary school students from the community of San Luis Rio Colorado Valley visited the ecological restoration project. The activity was carried out with the entire school that manages multigrade groups.
We are proud that Yuli, Annelisse and Yareli, interns at Pronatura Noroeste conducted the activity with our community engagement program coordinator.
The students were very excited when they arrived at the site, exploring the pollinator garden and the insect hotels and also experienced birdwatching. The tour continued at the nursery area where our team presented about the native plants of the Sonoran Desert region. The diversity of plants enriches the subsistence for the pollinator species, helps the pollen exchange process and aids in the reproduction of the plants, allowing the generation of fruits and seeds to ensure that species survives in the following seasons.
Students also walked the interpretive trail to know more about wildlife, native flora and the importance of pollination for the Miguel Alemán Restoration Forest.
After building the pollinator garden, we have records of pollinator species that have been witnessed at the site: the white butterfly with black patches (Pontia protodice), the queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus), the elegant sulphur butterfly (Nathalis iole), the red patch butterfly (Euphydryas chalcedona), the convergent ladybug (Hippodamia covergens) and the Costa’s Hummingbird (Calypte costae).
The experiences of the new generations that visit the forest through environmental education actions helps to strengthen values in children to care for and conserve the environment, in this case to protect pollinating species and recognize their importance in the region and the world.
