In December of 2012, Thomasboro Academy – a school where 93% of the students who attend are considered economically disadvantaged – welcomed 36 Junior ROTC students from nearby Harding University High school. Armed with the Junior Achievement curriculum, these cadets visited Thomasboro on five separate occasions to teach kindergarten, first and second grade children lessons surrounding financial literacy, entrepreneurship and workplace readiness.
As a result of donor support through the GlobalGiving site, one particular pair of Harding JROTC cadets made a significant impact in Gloria Hemple’s second grade classroom. Her high school volunteers not only did a good job presenting the material and asking students questions, but they were polite and did well interacting with all the students in the classroom. According to Ms. Hemple, the cadet volunteers “were very well behaved and were role models for my students. They encouraged my students to do well at home and in school”.
In summary, 23 Thomasboro 2nd grade students were able to participate with two JROTC Cadet volunteers. The volunteers empowered them to own their future, demonstrated leadership and maturity, and encouraged students to connect what they are learning in school to their future success. Similarly, Cadets gained valuable public speaking and leadership skills and were inspired to explore and express their own plans for the future!
