A young girl learns to drive, with your help

Mary learning to drive.
Mary learning to drive.

Your support of World Concern’s vocational training center in South Sudan has helped young people, like Mary, gain valuable skills so they can work and earn income to support their families.

Mary is a determined young woman who recently graduated from World Concern's vocational training program in Lietnhom, where she learned how to drive. Mary was one of 17 students in her vocational training class to graduate with a certificate. She is very likely the first female driver in Warrap State, and already has leads on jobs.

Mary is also a single mother of a two-year-old daughter. She wanted to learn to drive so she could help her community and support herself and her daughter. At first, people made fun of her, asking why a young woman would want to learn to drive. Some even asked her parents why they let her learn.

But Mary’s parents were both supportive of her learning a job skill, and they’re proud of her success in school. Mary’s father is in the military, and her mother works at a local prison.

She and her family endured years of war. The opportunity to learn a skill like driving, which is in high demand, has opened up a new life of independence for her. She is excited about the future and has hope for the first time.

Thank you for helping bring hope and practical help to someone like Mary.
