The severe drought in Zambia is threatening millions of people over the coming months. The lack of rains has not only decimated the maize crops and the agricultural sector but has also caused chaos for businesses through lack of power supply. 95% of Zambia’s power comes from hydroelectric power and the dams that generate this power are now at record low levels. The government has implemented mass load shedding. This means that people routinely have the power off for 8-12 hours every day, making working conditions incredibly challenging and difficult to manage.
Hands Around the World is working with our partners in Zambia to provide bags of maize for families of children with disabilities. These families already face hardship, challenges and an uphill battle to ensure their child can access school and medical support. Together with our partners in Zambia, these children have been identified for this food relief when they come for their annual wheelchair check-up and follow up appointments. Our partners have distributed 25kg bags of maize to over 480 children to date and plan to repeat this activity. A 25kg bag of maize will provide some relief to the child and family for 4-6 weeks.
All our partners across Zambia express the same grave concerns for children in their care, food security this year is going to be an enormous challenge.
Thank you for donation which has made a positive difference to the children supported.
