Thank you so much for contributing towards this special project for ORT SA CAPE in South Africa, through CHW's "microproject" page on GlobalGiving! Your kindness has sponsored places for teachers to attend training workshops, so that they can deliver a higher quality of education to the children in their classrooms.

Many of the donations given to this project were received during GlobalGiving's Little By Little campaign in April. We are very thankful to each of you who gave during this campaign, and to those who continued to give after it had ended. Your help is making such a difference for teachers and children in Cape Town!

Bev, from ORT SA CAPE, sent us an update and photos. Here are some highlights of what your support has made possible since the campaign took place:

ORT SA CAPE believes in the importance of play to help children develop their confidence and creativity and also to foster holistic development in children.

The team commemorated the first International Day of Play on 11 June, by hosting various teacher training and staff development workshops around this time.

Help from CHW's supporters went towards two of these teacher training workshops, held on 28 May and 7 June. The teachers learnt many useful techniques, including the use of Lego for educational play.

In July, ORT SA CAPE held a networking event for Principals. Sessions are held every so often and this initiative was born out of the need for ECD (Early Childhood Development) Centre Principals to be supported in their own professional development and to learn about various topics of interest, as well as allowing them the time to learn from each other.

Previous professional development sessions included workshops on:

  • Gender Based Violence and the procedures to follow should support be needed;
  • Mindfulness and self-care;
  • Running a successful ECD centre.

Supporting the Principals in this way, allows them to more effectively run the ECD centres, providing the children with a better early education.

On 18 July, it was Mandela Day. This is marked on Mandela's birthday each year and it is a call to action for people to make a difference in their communities. In addition to their usual activities, ORT SA CAPE's team carried out a special project, packing and distributing care packages to organisations supporting displaced women and children, among others. The care packages included hygiene items, blankets, stationary/educational resources and everyday essentials.

A social worker at one of the shelters expressed her gratitude not just for the care packages, but also for the time that the team spent with the residents too. The children really benefited from this.

The theme for Mandela Day in 2024 was "It's in your hands". We are so grateful to you for extending a hand to help the children in Cape Town and for donating so generously, so that they can receive a better-quality education. This truly is such an important gift!
