The 2013 SEDS Rocketry challenge has gotten off to a great start. We have seen a dramatic improvement in team engagement this year with excellent work being completed by students in their drive to complete the challenge of launching a rocket to 10,000 feet with a three pound scientific payload. Ten teams have filed to participate this year which impacts over 150 students at universities across the country. This is double the number we had participating in 2012. Teams will be launching their rockets over the summer of 2013 and submitting their final reports for scoring in September 2013.

The 2013 SEDS Rocketry Challenge has helped students develop engineering, project management, and leadership skills. This gives them an edge as they move forward with their education or enter the job market. Teams have taken strong concepts like a rocket launched autonomous drone, custom made carbon fiber airframes, and g force materials testing from the design stage and incorporated them into a flyable rocket. The support of Give for Youth has helped make this year’s challenge possible. It is our hope this project will continue to grow as we get ready to launch the 2014 SEDS Rocketry Challenge.

“This project (2013 SEDS Rocketry Challenge) gives students firsthand experience in what it takes to engineer something. We have learned things that are impossible to teach in a classroom and that leaves an experience that is very hard to get anywhere else.” Nick Sunderlin Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering B.S. ’13 University at Buffalo
