This microproject will help provide the veterinary care, nutrition and intensive nursing needed to give this critically compromised young rhino calf the best possible chance of survival and recovery. She arrived severely dehydrated, extremely weak and unable to stand or suckle properly. As she regains strength, her needs will progress from emergency stabilisation to ongoing care and specialised rehabilitation, helping her develop the strength and independence needed for a future in the wild.
She arrived severely dehydrated, extremely weak and unable to stand or suckle properly, with wounds and abscesses on all four feet. She requires intensive veterinary care, nutritional support and ongoing rehabilitation to regain her strength and develop the independence she needs to thrive.
Funding will help support her veterinary treatment, intravenous fluids, medications, wound care, medical supplies, milk, nutrition and 24 hour nursing. As she stabilises, it will also support her ongoing care, rehabilitation and development as she grows stronger and more independent in preparation for a life back in the wild.
We actively mitigate the detrimental effects of rhino poaching by rescuing orphaned and injured rhinos. After rehabilitation, these rhinos are reintroduced into healthy and protected ecosystems, where they play a crucial role in repopulating their species and contributing to the rewilding of natural habitats. This strategic approach effectively reduces the impact of poaching on the national rhino herd and ensures their sustained survival within protected areas.
